For couples that like to travel, proposing in an exotic location feels like a natural decision. No responsibilities, no agenda, just the two of you enjoying each other’s love. If you are looking to capture that special moment on Kauai or in general, there are some things you should take in to consideration before dropping on one knee. Here are some tips to making your Kauai proposal even more amazing.
1. The right photographer
After shooting several proposals around Kauai, I know it’s best to have someone who knows the area well. It’s a delicate moment, a photographer needs understand how to get the shot but keep a distance to not ruin/impede on the couple. Plus, having inside knowledge on locations is a huge advantage, so you don’t have to stress about finding a good spot when you get there.
2. The perfect location
The ideal location differs from couple to couple, but in general I hear the words “secluded beach, great view, easy access.” Most don’t want to share this moment in a crowded area, but finding a secluded beach in Kauai isn’t always easy to get to. In general, the beaches are less packed after 4 when all the tourists start leaving for dinner, which is better for lighting as well. I like to give the man a general area that would work, so he can doesn’t feel like he has to hit an exact mark and can pick the right moment.
3. The perfect time
Most requests I get are for sunset, which as a photographer I prefer as well because the natural light is best. But as long as it makes sense for the activity. Walking down the beach before dinner makes sense at sunset, but on top of a mountain trail seems like it would be more fitting mid-day. If you’re looking for times around sunset, check out this website to look up sunset time on the date you’re thinking of: https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/
4. If you’re hiring a photographer to capture the proposal, get a photo session as well
Most couples take engagement photos later on, but if you get a photo session after the proposal it’s kinda like killing two birds with one stone. All of my clients who have hired me for the proposal and photo session afterwards have used the photos for their invitations, wedding websites, and other needs for down the road. And it doesn’t have to be long, all of the photos you see in this post were taken within 45 minutes (5 mins proposal, 10 mins for them to enjoy the moment, and 30 mins taking photos).
